There is so many reasons why. The main one is how this show affected our lifes when we were younger and then realizing how awfully accurate the show was as grown ups. When i was 12 years old, i hated Buffy in season 6 and i hated spuffy even more , i just didnt get it you see ?
It’s not about the supernatural , it’s just the surface. Beneath, Btvs is about life , love , friendship , pain and joy. It shows that being strong means fighting and never give up , that it’s ok to make mistakes but you have to assume the consequences , the important part is to get up and to keep moving on. Name one drama show where people admire and defend like warriors the female lead. Btvs started this. Buffy is one of the very first feminist icon , her character isnt ruled by her love interests like many shows nowadays , she is fierce and strong and generous and kind , she is someone we can admire but she is also weak at times and that’s what make her so incredibly human and why we relate to her so much. But even if we didnt , there was Willow and her awkwardness , Xander and his feeling of being worthless , Giles and his way to hide from real life by being always around books , Cordelia and her desperate need to fit in to fill her loneliness , Angel and his need of redemption , Spike’s character being a catharsis and so on. There was moments in the show that traumatized us , made us cry or made us laugh. WE got to experience so many feelings through the years by watching these characters becoming adults. We related to them , felt for them. We all cried when Buffy had to kill Angel or when Tara died , and still after 10 years , the sentence "the hardest thing in this world is to live in it" can bring out some pain inside , not just because we remember Buffy dying to save the world but also because it was a life lesson that we got to live on our own when we grew up.
Joss’s writing is breathtaking , the character developments is spot on and the relationship between the characters are genuine. And that’s really important : genuine affection , love and friendship , that’s such a big part of the show because Buffy wouldnt be like this without the support of Giles who played the father figure and the scooby gang . AND IT SPEAKS TO ME SO MUCH because i grew up without a father too and there was so many time i felt like giving up and btvs helped me in some way.
I think that’s it , the message that this show keep delivering generations after generations , to never give up and it doesnt lie to you saying that good always wins , that your efforts will pay or that you will find true love , but you ask yourself “what’s the point then?” and you have 7 seasons answering that question for you.
